Timing
Classroom Under Sail begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. Please be
at India Point Park by 9:45 a.m. Late arrival means a shortened
program for your class.
Clothing
It is cooler on the water, so dress warmly. If it looks
like it might rain, have students bring raingear. Sneakers
should be worn on the ship.
Capacity
The capacity of the Providence is 40 passengers. This includes
teachers and chaperones.
Chaperones
We ask that teachers
and chaperones assist with our program. Please try to provide
one chaperone for every 10 students. We expect chaperones
to monitor students' behavior.
Listening
Listening to instructions is an important part of operating
a tall ship. Please do not bring personal stereos on the
boat! It is essential that all passengers hear directions.
Food
There is a time allotted for lunch, but eating is not allowed
until that time. Gum and candy are not allowed on the Providence.
The Providence is certified by the US Coast Guard. Her Captain
and crew are licensed, certified, and drug free.
Restrooms
We ask that students and teachers use the restroom before
coming aboard the Providence. We do have a toilet aboard,
but it is delicate and waste must be stored in limited amounts
aboard the vessel until we can pump it out.
Lifejackets
Lifejackets are carried for each and every person aboard
the Providence. While we do not require them to be worn, they are available
upon request.
Age Requirements
Minimum age for sail participants is 4th grade.
For younger groups, we offer Sloop Providence Dockside, a presentation with
similar programming on the dock and aboard the Providence.
During Sloop Providence Dockside, students participate in sail training and educational activities
without the Providence leaving the dock.
Cancellations
We reserve the right to cancel due to inclement weather
(high wind, thunderstorms, etc.), although we will go out in
rain. If the Captain decides to cancel the trip, we will
work with you to reschedule. Cancellation due to cold or
rain is at your discretion.
